Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about switching accountants, UK tax filings, monthly subscription packages, and statutory HMRC deadlines.

Switching to MH Accountancy

How difficult is it to switch from my current accountant?

Switching is completely seamless and stress-free. You do not need to have awkward conversations or chase paperwork. Once you decide to join MH Accountancy UK, we handle the entire professional handover on your behalf:

  • We issue a professional clearance request directly to your previous accountant;
  • We collect your prior year accounts, tax computations, trial balances, and payroll records;
  • We obtain HMRC authorisation codes so we can immediately act as your official tax agent.

The entire handover typically takes less than 7 to 10 working days, with zero disruption to your daily operations.

Will there be any gap or penalty risk during the handover?

No. We perform an immediate calendar audit of your Companies House and HMRC deadlines upon appointment. If you have an urgent VAT return or Corporation Tax deadline approaching within the next 30 days, we prioritise emergency filing to ensure you never face late penalties.

Can I switch accountants in the middle of a financial year?

Yes, absolutely. You do not need to wait until your financial year-end. In fact, switching mid-year gives us time to clean up your bookkeeping, review tax-saving opportunities, and set up your payroll smoothly well ahead of statutory filing deadlines.

Fees, Subscriptions & Payments

Are your fees really fixed? Are there any hidden surprise charges?

Yes, 100%. We operate with complete fee transparency. The price we quote in your Letter of Engagement is the exact price you pay. We never bill for routine phone calls, quick emails, or general tax queries. If you ever require special ad-hoc work outside your scope (e.g. an in-depth HMRC enquiry or mortgage reference letter), we provide a fixed quote for your approval before commencing work.

What is the difference between your Monthly Subscriptions and One-off Charges?

Our Monthly Subscription Plans (£75/mo, £120/mo, £175/mo) spread your accounting costs evenly across 12 months and include year-round proactive support, annual accounts, tax returns, director payroll, and confirmation statements.

Our One-off Service Charges (e.g. £1,200 for Limited Company Accounts, £250 for VAT Return, £300 for Self-Assessment) are standalone fee engagements designed for businesses that prefer paying strictly on completion without an ongoing monthly retainer.

What payment methods do you accept?

Monthly subscription plans are processed conveniently via automated recurring Direct Debit or debit/credit card. One-off service invoices can be settled via UK bank transfer (BACS) or debit/credit card with full VAT receipts issued.

UK Tax & Statutory HMRC Deadlines

What are the key annual deadlines for a UK Limited Company?

Every UK limited company has three critical statutory deadlines:

  • Companies House Statutory Accounts: Due 9 months after your financial accounting reference date (ARD);
  • Corporation Tax Payment: Due 9 months and 1 day after your accounting year-end;
  • Corporation Tax Return (CT600): Due 12 months after your accounting year-end;
  • Annual Confirmation Statement (CS01): Due exactly 12 months from incorporation or previous confirmation date.

As your accountants, we track all these dates and file well ahead of time to eliminate penalty risk.

When is the Self-Assessment tax return filing and payment deadline?

For digital submissions, the deadline is midnight on 31st January following the end of the tax year (e.g. 31 January 2026 for the 2024/25 tax year). Any tax owed, including payments on account, must also be paid by 31st January to avoid HMRC interest and automatic £100 late penalties.

What happens if I have already missed a filing deadline?

Don’t panic, but act immediately. Companies House and HMRC impose escalating penalties the longer a return remains outstanding. Contact us straight away – we will quickly prepare your catch-up accounts, submit the outstanding returns, and represent you in appealing penalties where reasonable excuse criteria apply.

Limited Company vs Sole Trader

Should I trade as a Sole Trader or incorporate a Limited Company?

This depends on your annual profits, liability exposure, and growth plans:

  • Sole Trader: Simpler administration, lower accounting costs, but you have personal legal liability for business debts. Generally best for profits under £30k to £40k.
  • Limited Company: Protects your personal assets with limited liability, offers superior tax efficiency through salary and dividend planning at higher profit levels, and presents a prestigious corporate image to commercial clients.

How fast can you form a new UK Limited Company?

We can incorporate your company at Companies House on the same working day (typically 3 to 6 hours). Our £250 setup service includes official Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum & Articles of Association, share certificates, and complete registration for Corporation Tax and PAYE with HMRC.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) & Software

What is Making Tax Digital (MTD) and do I need to comply?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s initiative requiring businesses to keep digital records and submit returns using compatible software. All VAT-registered businesses in the UK must comply with MTD for VAT. MTD for Income Tax (ITSA) will also become mandatory for sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 from April 2026. We ensure all your submissions are 100% MTD-compliant.

Which accounting software packages do you work with?

We support all leading UK accounting platforms including Xero, QuickBooks Online, FreeAgent, Sage, and Dext. If you currently use Excel spreadsheets or paper receipts, we can help transition you to digital bookkeeping or handle all the data entry on your behalf.

Do I have to visit your Southend On Sea office in person?

No, not unless you want to! We service clients nationwide across the UK 100% digitally through secure portals, video calls, email, and WhatsApp. However, if you are based in Essex or London and prefer face-to-face meetings, our doors at 63A Southchurch Road, Southend On Sea, SS1 2NL are always open by appointment.
